The 1958 British Grand Prix

This historic Shell film is of the 1958 British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Saturday 19th July 1958.

Thousands of spectators gather at the Silverstone race track to watch the British Grand Prix. This documentary follows the race as the major names of motor racing compete over the 225 miles (360 kilometres) of the Northamptonshire circuit.

The race was finally won by Peter Collins (Ferrari) from Mike Hawthorn (Ferrari) and Roy Salvadori (Cooper)…

Peter Collins died on Sunday August 3rd during the 1958 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, just weeks after winning the British Grand Prix. He had achieved three wins and nine podiums, with four non-championship race wins in Formula One.

Fangio Vs Brabham 1978

Here is an extremely memorable piece of footage where 5-time world champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, aged 66, races against Jack Brabham.

The 4 lap ‘demonstration’ was run after the Australian Grand Prix at Sandown in 1978. With Fangio in his W196 Mercedes Benz and Brabham in his Repco Brabham, a car 12 years newer than Fangio’s.

BRM: The Genesis

In 1949, the original BRM body buck was handcrafted to help build Britain’s first Formula One racing car – the Mark 1 P15 V16.

As the car evolved, so the body buck and the original car were consigned to the annals of history. The mere existence of the body buck became a myth.

After 70 years and over 5 years of searching, the body buck has been found.

With the discovery, so begins a journey to create Britain very first Formula One car in a form not seen for over 70 years.

Rufforth and Cadwell Park 1969

This rare early BRSCC film includes getting ready for a club meeting at Rufforth Racing Circuit in Yorkshire and an International Formula 3 event at Cadwell Park. Featuring Ronnie Peterson, James Hunt, Reine Wisell, Tim Schenken and Howden Ganley in Formula 3 and Barry Pearson, John Hine, Mike Crabtree and John Fitzpatrick in saloons.

The film of Rufforth circuit reminds of the time I went there to see round 3 of the Lombard British Formula 3 Championship in April 1972, the race was won by Andy Sutcliffe in a GRD… Graham Clark.

Richard Seaman

This film is of the life of Richard John Beattie Seaman (4 February 1913 – 25 June 1939), a pre-war British Grand Prix racing car driver. He drove for the Mercedes-Benz team from 1937–1939 in the Mercedes-Benz W154 car, winning the 1938 German Grand Prix. He died of his injuries after his car overturned at the 1939 Belgian Grand Prix.

Sport Kings of Speed

This is quite a nostalgic film for me as my father took me to the British Grand Prix at Aintree in 1959, I was aged 8 and the piece about the racing school at Brands Hatch reminds me of my days when I raced at Mallory Park with the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School in the early 1970’s… Graham Clark.
