includes Supersports & Formula 5000 cars. In the late 1960s and 1970s, 5-litre Formula 5000 cars had 500bhp at their disposal, making them the fastest single-seaters of their day, with little in the way of aerodynamic downforce and thick, slick tyres. Nine cars have been shipped across from New Zealand to add to the European entrants for the event, which is the first of two events which the awesome F5000 cars will be taking part in. The second is at Silverstone the following weekend (Silverstone Classic Meeting Sat/Sun 30/31 July) when the nine New Zealand drivers will be joined by seventeen European entries in the HSCC Derek Bell Trophy Race. The sight of a full grid of these machines heading into the first corner will be sight to behold and not one enthusiasts of these cars would what to miss.. |
| In the Orwell Supersports Cup,
a 1971 McLaren M8F driven by Ashford's Richard Piper will be the feature car of the event.
With close to 900 horsepower despite being more than 20 years old, the McLaren is a
beast of a car, and will make a unique sight and sound as it races around the 2.6-mile track. Several local drivers will be in action over the weekend, in addition to Piper's McLaren, Sittingbourne's Mike Scott will also be taking part in the Orwell Supersports Cup, in a Class D Gropa CMC. In the Historic Formula Junior event David Brown, from Ashford, will be driving a Lola Mk5A. In The Classic F3 event, another Ashford-based driver, Warren Moye will drive a Delta T79 and in the Classic Sports Car event, Sevenoaks' Adrian Van Der Kroft will be competing against McLaren Formula One designer Adrian Newey. Seven races will take place on Saturday and eight on Sunday; qualifying starts at 9.00am on Saturday and 10.00am Sunday. Racing starts at 1.30pm on Saturday, and 1.40pm on Sunday. |
